Meta Commits More Than $50 Billion to Louisiana Data Center

The News: Meta will invest more than $50 billion in its Richland Parish data center and surrounding infrastructure, expanding the project to nearly 10 million square feet with five gigawatts of IT capacity. The development will support approximately 7,500 construction jobs at peak activity, while Meta will fund seven natural gas generating plants, about 240 miles of new transmission lines, battery storage facilities and related water and energy infrastructure.

Project Watch Take: The expansion demonstrates that securing hyperscale data centers now requires regions to deliver energy generation, transmission capacity, water infrastructure and skilled labor at an unprecedented scale. Meta’s commitment to pay the project’s infrastructure costs and support workforce training could help Louisiana capture the economic benefits while addressing public concerns about utilities subsidizing data center growth.
