Targeted Tropical Forest Restoration Can Reduce Water Losses

The News: A study published in Nature Climate Change finds that strategically restoring tropical forests can partially offset the disruption to regional water cycles caused by deforestation. Researchers estimate that restoring 43% to 63% of degraded forest area in South America and 53% to 83% in Africa could compensate for lost hydrological function, although climatic constraints make comparable recovery more difficult in Southeast Asia.
