Steel Dynamics Plans $200 Million Aluminum Slab Plant in Mississippi

The News: Steel Dynamics plans to invest $200 million in a recycled aluminum slab plant at the Golden Triangle Industrial Park in Lowndes County, Mississippi. Scheduled to begin operations during the first half of 2027, the facility will convert used beverage cans into recycled aluminum slabs for the company’s nearby rolling mill. Mississippi will support road and rail improvements and provide incentives through its Major Economic Impact Authority program. SDI relocated the project from Arizona after local opposition and regulatory delays stalled construction.

Project Watch Take: The relocation shows how permitting certainty, community support and infrastructure readiness can outweigh an earlier site decision. Mississippi offered an established industrial park, direct road and rail support and a clearer path to operation—turning another state’s delayed project into a $200 million investment win.
