NextEra and Dominion Seek Approval for Historic Utility Merger

The News: NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy have filed state and federal applications seeking approval for their proposed $67 billion combination, which would create the world’s largest regulated electric utility by market capitalization. The combined company would serve approximately 10 million customer accounts across Florida, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, with 110 gigawatts of generation capacity. Dominion customers in Virginia and the Carolinas would receive $2.25 billion in shareholder-funded bill credits.

Project Watch Take: The proposed merger reflects how rapidly rising demand from data centers, advanced manufacturing and population growth is reshaping the utility industry. For economic developers, the critical issue is whether greater scale allows the combined company to finance and deliver generation and transmission infrastructure faster without shifting excessive costs to existing customers. Regulatory decisions could directly influence the competitiveness of four of America’s fastest-growing states.
