Landry Questions New Orleans’ Role in Louisiana’s Economic Future

The News: Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry says New Orleans is no longer as central to the state’s economic success as it once was, pointing to Meta’s expanding $50 billion data center project in Richland Parish as evidence that major investment is shifting elsewhere. Economic data still shows the New Orleans region generating roughly 20% to 25% of Louisiana’s economy and a similar share of state tax revenue, while Orleans and neighboring Jefferson Parish remain among the state’s largest sources of sales and income taxes.

Project Watch Take: Louisiana’s emerging data center corridor is unquestionably changing the state’s economic map, but a single megaproject does not replace the diversified employment, trade, tourism, healthcare and commercial activity generated by a major metropolitan region. The stronger story for Louisiana is not that New Orleans matters less—it is that the state is developing additional centers of investment beyond its traditional economic anchor.
